FORMAT A - RECORD - TYPE 2: REPLICATE DATA
Type 2 records are replicate data. Usually, each effort or unit sample will have at least one TYPE 2 record. Unless the sampling is species specific (adult culled programs), the variables on this record are to include all species. Information taken on species outside the collection or sample unit are to be recorded under Replicate Number = 00; data on species that do not show up on the trip ticket are recorded under Replicate Number = 00. Replicate 0 is to be included in the count of all replicates which is recorded on Record Type I under NUMBER OF REPLICATES.
If any fields pertaining to total species weight or number are unknown or not applicable, code the field with '9's'. All weights are in metric units (kg). One pound = 0.454 kilogram.
| Columns | Character Type | Computer Field Type (C=Character) (N=Numeric) | Field Title (Computer Field Name) | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|

| 9-10 | Digit | (N) | Replicate Number (Rep) | Yes | A replicate is a: 1. Collection effort or a group of collection efforts depending on whether the data for the individual efforts are pooled. If the data are not pooled, each effort is given a unique replicate number. For example, a trawl is a collection effort. Or 2. Unit sample of a collection effort or a group of collection efforts. For example, a fish box or fish basket sample of a collection is a unit sample. Each unit sample is given a unique replicate number. Or 3. Market category e.g., jumbo flounder. Or 4. | 25-30 | Numeric | (N) | Collection Size (ColSze) | Yes | For unculled samples record the total weight (in kilograms) of the catch. For culled samples or when more than one biological sample is taken proportion the total catch weight or the market category weights among the replicates according to the weight of the samples taken for each replicate. The sum of all the collection size fields should equal the weight of the total catch. If there is no catch, record the field as zero. |
| 31-36 | Numeric | (N) | Sample Size (SamSze) | Yes | Record the weight of the sample taken for this replicate. Collection size and sample size will be the same number when no samples are taken. The sum of Sample Number or Sample Weight, whichever is applicable, across all Type 3 records associated with this replicate should equal the value in Sample Size. For example, the weight of a fish basket (unculled) or the weight of fish boxes for market category would be recorded here. |

FORMAT A - RECORD - TYPE 3: SPECIES DATA
All fields except tagging related or quality fields MUST BE RECORD; otherwise fill fields pertaining to species weight or number with '9's' (or '.'). For qualitative estimates of abundance use:

- 99996 (Relatively common)

The above numbers should be entered in the fields for Collection Number, Sample Number and Subsample Number when applicable. Record all weights in metric units (kg). One pound = 0.454 kilogram.
| Columns | Character Type | Computer Field Type (C=Character) (N=Numeric) | Field Title (Computer Field Name) | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Digit | (C) | Record Type | Yes | THIS FIELD WILL ALWAYS BE CODED. |
| 2-10 | Digit | (N) | (Control2 - link to Record Type2) | Yes | |
| 2-21 | Numeric | (N) | (Control3) | Yes | |
| 2-8 | Digit | (N) | Sequence Number (Seq_No) (Control1) | Yes | |
| 9-10 | Digit | (N) | Replicate (Rep) | Yes | This corresponds to the replicate number of columns 10-11 for the record type 2. For species observed but not sampled record under replicate zero. |
| 11-20 | Digit | (C) | Species (Species) | Yes | This is a hierarchical code for the species. The general basis for this code is: Class/Order/Family/Genus/Species. For example, flounders of the genus Paralichthys would be recorded as 8857030300. However, if a species is positively identified as P. albigutta it would be recorded as 8857030302. If only the family could be determined, it would be recorded as 8857030000. See Appendix G2 for these ten-digit NODC codes. Record the species as identified from actual biologist sampling (not dealer id). Descriptive name associated with species can be obtained by using one of four SAS Formats: '$AFSNAME.', '$COMMON.', '$LATIN.', OR '$SPPNAME.'. For example, to have species codes displayed as common names, use the SAS code 'Format Species $COMMON.;' in a SAS program. |
| 21 | Alpha/Digit | (C) | Species Status (SpStatus or Status) | Yes | This is the same as the field SIZE_CLASS on record type 2. If this field is left blank, it is assumed to be 0 (zero). THIS FIELD IS RECORDED AS AN ALPHA CHARACTER IN SOME PROGRAMS. |
| 25-29 | Digit | (N) | Collection Number (ColNum) | Yes | The total number of individuals of a species/status in the trip. This value can be obtained by sampling the entire catch or computing the number by collection Number = Sample Number * Collection Weight Sample Weight. The value must be an integer. |
| 30-35 | Numeric | (N) | Collection Weight (ColWgt) | Yes | For culled samples this will equal the market category weight on the trip ticket if only one species occurred in the market category and only one box was sampled (or all box samples are grouped in one replicate), otherwise the market category weight must be split among the species as described below under Sample Weight. For unculled samples this will be the weight of the species/status in the replicate collection. |
| 36-40 | Digit | (N) | Sample Number (SamNum) | Yes | For culled samples record for a single species/ status the number of individuals in a box(es) the sampler counted as the fish were packed out. For unculled samples this is the total number of the given species in the replicate sample (not replicate collection unless they are the same). If the entire collection is sampled, this is the same as Collection Number. For spat full evaluations, this is the sum of live and recently dead spat. The value must be a whole number. |
| 41-46 | Numeric | (N) | Sample Weight (SamWgt) | Yes | This is the total weight (kg) of the individuals recorded in Sample Number. In culled samples this will equal the sum of the weights of the fish boxes if only one species occurred in the boxes. If more than one species occurred, the sum of fish boxes must be proportioned among the species using one of the following methods: (1) the total weight of the species is obtained by the sampler weighing all of the individuals, (2) a sample of the individuals of the species are weighed and the average weight is used to proportion the total box weights, (3) assume the different species have the same average weight and proportion the box weights by number of individuals of a species. |
| 47-51 | Digit | (N) | Subsample Number (SubNum) | Yes | This is the total number of individuals shown on Record 4 that have biological data (length, etc.). If no subsample is taken, this is the same as sample number. |

| 58 | Digit | (N) | Form of Record Type 4 (Form_4) | Yes | This field is to indicate the Format of the following data. This field would be recorded as follows: Contents of SAS Format 'FORMFOR.'. (SAS code: Format Form_4 FORMFOR.;) 0 = No data taken on individuals 1 = Modal length frequencies are recorded. Each length is preceded by the frequency of that length. FORMAT A - RECORD - TYPE 4: INDIVIDUAL DATA
Two separate forms though in part identical, are given for individual data. Their use depends on the data to be collected. One form is for frequency and length data only. The other form is to be used when data besides or in addition to those above variables are to be recorded for individuals. ALWAYS RECORD DATA AS FREQUENCIES OF UNIQUE DATA. For those species with only a range of lengths to be recorded, the minimum is recorded first, followed by the maximum length.
